Robert Franklin Linville was born December 17, 1923 to Linzy Robert and Bessie May Palmer Linville in Piqua, Kansas. He was the second of four sons born to them. Their family homesteaded 40 acres on Lickfork Creek when he was a young boy. He grew up in the Fox community and attended school there until the eighth grade, which was the highest grade taught at their school. After finishing school, he worked at a variety of jobs, sometimes with very little pay, until joining the Army at age 19. He and all three of his brothers served during WWII.
Robert received a Purple Heart, Bronze Star, Good Conduct Medal and Victory Medal. During WWII, he left the United States from the East coast returning on the West coast, going all the way around the world-mostly by ship. He traveled around North Africa through the Mediterranean, crossed the Suez Canal and was with Stillwell’s 124th Cavalry in Burma where he was wounded.
After returning to Fox at the end of the war he met Mary Ann Wrinkles. He and his brother Blue began dating Mary and her sister Mabel and before long, both couples were engaged to be married. The Linville brothers married the Wrinkles sisters on December 18, 1945 in a double wedding ceremony at Fox, performed by Albert Powell, Justice of the Peace.
Robert and Mary had two children, Cherlyn Judith and Travis Lane Linville.
Robert was a Christian man who helped build the Church of Christ at Fox where he attended for many years.
Robert first got into the cattle business because he had realized after the depression, that people who owned cattle had fared better than most, so after returning from the war, he started working on getting himself some cattle.
Robert was a pioneer of the cattle business in the Fox area and many young men have followed in his footsteps. He was the first from this area to begin working at area sale barns and inspired many young men to do the same. He continued in the cattle business until he was in his eighties.
Robert was preceded in death by Mary, his wife of 65 years, his father and mother, and two brothers, Lamoin Bluford Linville and Jack Linville. He is survived by one of his brothers, Charles Linville of Heber Springs, both of his children, Cherlyn Brown and husband Jerry Brown of Sulphur, Oklahoma, and Travis and Noreen Linville of Fox, Arkansas. He is also survived by five grandchildren, DeAnna Petersen (Larry), Cherri Davenport (Ron), Wayne Baker (Jennie), Shannon Green (Sammy), Samuel Linville (Kim), as well as sixteen great-grandchildren, five great-great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Visitation will take place on Tuesday, January 10, 2017 from 1:00-2:00 PM at Bethlehem General Baptist Church in Fox, Arkansas. Funeral services will follow the visitation beginning at 2:00 PM with Brother Darrell Treat and Brother Mike Permenter. Interment will follow the service at Fox Cemetery in Fox, Arkansas with military honors.
Pallbearers are great-grandsons, Lonnie Petersen, Linzy Petersen, Luke Davenport, Levi Davenport, Dan Baker, Dakota Gipson, Steven Baker, and Lincoln Davenport. Honorary pallbearers are Max Gipson, Jimmy Baker, and Cole Linville.
Roller Crouch Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
