Walter Bernice Steele, 64, of Norphlet died Thursday in a local hospital. Born Nov. 9, 1901, in Nevada County, he was the son of King Burnett and Ida Cummings Steele. He was a retired pumper for Phillips Petroleum Company and had lived in the Norphlet area since 1921. He was a Mason and was past grand master of Lodge No. 718, F&AM. He was a veteran of World War I and a member of Norphlet Baptist Church. Survivors include his widow, Mrs. Mittie Motes Steele, Norphlet; two sons, Walter B. and Charles Steele, Belin, N.M., a step-son, Floyd Ellison, Ft. Smith; a brother, Perry Steele, California; and seven grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Norphlet Baptist Church with Rev. Zane Chesser and Rev. John Burton officiating. Burial will be in Smackover Cemetery under the direction of Young's. The body will be carried to the church one hour prior to the time for the services. Active pallbearers will be O. E. Bishop, G. L. Bates, Sr., Roy Hollier, Ralph Johnson, Ellis Washington and Joe Gunn. Masonic rites by the Norphlet Lodge, will be held at the graveside.
