Edward T. Riggs, 68, of Norphlet was pronounced dead on arrival at Union Memorial Hospital Sunday night after a two-car accident approximately one half mile north of the railroad crossing on Millers Bluff Road in Norphlet. State Trooper Richard Branch reported that Riggs and his wife were pulling out of his driveway onto Millers Bluff Road, and another car driven by Travis Ray Arnold, 20, of Rt. 4, was headed north on Millers Bluff Road when the collision occurred at 7:15 p.m. Mrs. Riggs was placed under observation at Union Memorial. Arnold and the only other occupant of his car, Billy Ray Nordmeyer, 20, of Smackover, were taken to Doren Hospital in Smackover. Arnold was placed under observation and Nordmeyer was listed in serious condition with cuts about the face. Both cars were heavily damaged. Points of impact were the right front of the Arnold car and the left door and side of the Riggs car. Edward T. Riggs was born Sept. 30, 1900, in Calhoun County, the son of Rubin and Frances Inzer Harvey. He had been a resident of Norphlet for the past 10 years. He was an employe of Monsanto Chemical Co. for 23 years before his retirement three years ago. Mr. Riggs was a member of the First Baptist Church of Norphlet. Survivors include his widow, Mrs. Helen Stephens Riggs; four daughters, Mrs. A. C. Erck, San Antonio, Tex., Mrs. John Campbell and Mrs. Gerrond, both of Hugoton, Kan., and Mrs. J. O. Cook, Smackover; three brothers; Troy Riggs of Price, Tex., I. J. Riggs, Norphlet, and Eugene Riggs, Camden; four sisters, Mrs. Fred Mitchell, Locust Bayou, Mrs. Jewel York, Norphlet, Mrs. Marion Beasley and Mrs. Jewel Stough, both of Camden; and 12 grandchildren.
