Gertrude Lea Speed transitioned to Heaven late in the afternoon on Saturday, February 7, 2015, just one month shy of her ninety-sixth birthday.
Gertrude was born in Chidester, Arkansas on March 16, 1919 to John Nelson Adams and Penny (Benton) Adams. She lived most of her life in Norphlet and Smackover where she worked for thirty-five years as a sales person and jewelry engraver for McHaney Jewlery. She was a life-long member of The First Baptist Church of Smackover.
Gertrude made friends easily, and everyone who had the good fortune of being in her company was touched by her humor, openness, and her sincere smile. She lived a full life, on her own terms but her greatest joy in life was taking care of her family.
Gertrude was predeceased by her parents, her beloved husband, Mack Norman Speed, two infant sons, sister, Rubye Mae Snider, and brother-in-law, Delbert Larkin Snider-all of Smackover.
She is survived by her only nephew, Dennis Lee Snider and his wife, Bernadette of Indianapolis, Indiana and their daughters, Dana, Danielle (Jason), and Nicole, who loved her as a Mom and Grandmother.
Gertrude spent her final years living in the care of the wonderful staff at Hudson Nursing Home and was Hudson Nursing Home Queen in 2011. Each and every one treated her as if she was one of their own family, providing her with companionship and excellent care. We also thank her physicians and the hospice nurses from Lifetouch Hospice who helped our family through this difficult time.
The family also extends a special thank you and debt of gratitude to James and Pam McDaniel for their loving care of their Aunt Gertrude. Their kindness and dedication will never be forgotten.
Graveside services at Smackover Cemetery will be 2 PM, Wednesday, February 11, 2015 with Rev. Carly Davis officiating. The family will recieve friends Wednesday from 10 am until noon at Youngs Funeral Directors.
