Miss Amelia Ball passed away February 2, 2013 at the age of 92. She was born in Ravenden, AR in Lawrence County, January 1, 1921. She was the third child of the late Dr. Ernest Ball Sr. and Mrs. Lizzie Steadman Ball.

Amelia started at Ravenden Public School at the age of five; she completed three grades before the family moved to Detroit, Michigan. There she entered the fourth grade at Field Elementary School. The depression came on and the family returned to Arkansas. Again she attended Ravenden Public School in the fifth grade. In the fall of 1931 the family moved to Vilonia, AR. where her father continued practicing medicine. Amelia entered sixth grade at Vilonia Public School and graduated from the twelfth grade in May 1938. In the fall she entered Arkansas State Teachers College (UCA). She earned a BSE in Education in May 1947, and a Masters Degree from Memphis State University in Memphis, TN in August 1958, also doing post graduate work at Vanderbilt George Peabody College for Teachers and University of Arkansas at Little Rock, Arkansas. During the WWII Amelia worked a short time at Ford Bacon & Davis Ordinance Plant in Jacksonville, AR. Amelia began her teaching career in a one room school four miles north of Vilonia, AR. and from there to Faulkner Gap, Morrilton School System, Pulaski County Special School District and finishing 30 years in the Little Rock Public Schools. Her teaching career spanned 42 years.

Amelia was preceded in death by her parents, a brother, Ernest Ball Jr., a sister Helen Vivian Ball and a great nephew, Frank T. Besier. She is survived by a niece, Lee Ann Fincher, a great nephew, Michael Chase Fincher (Mandy), Brady Golden Fincher and two first cousins, Mary Alice Ball of Sacramento, CA and Floreine Spotts Guthrie of Paragould, AR.

Funeral services are 3:00 p.m. Monday, February 4, 2013 at Roller-McNutt Funeral Home in Conway with burial following at Vilonia Cemetery. The family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff at Hospice Home Care, 2200 S. Bowman Road, Little Rock, AR.


Miss Helen Vivian Ball, 96, of Little Rock passed away peacefully on Friday, November 18, 2011.

She was born on Tuesday, June 22, 1915 in Ravenden, Arkansas to the late Dr. Ernest Ball, Sr. and Lizzie (Steadman) Ball.

Miss Helen attended schools in Ravenden, AR; Detroit, MI; and Vilonia, AR; and graduated from Conway High School in 1933. She received a Bachelors Degree in Education from Arkansas State Teacher's College (NowUCA) in 1949 and a Masters Degree in Education from Memphis State University, Memphis, TN in 1958. She did post graduate work at UALR, Little Rock, AR and at Vanderbilt George Peabody College for Teachers in Nashville, TN. Her teaching career began in a one room school house in Faulkner County. She taught in northeastern, AR; Pulaski County Schools; and Little Rock Public Schools.

She was of the Church of Christ faith and baptized at an early age in the Spring River at Ravenden, AR. Helen was interested in doing everything she could to help children.

She is survived by her sister, Amelia Ball; niece, Lee Ann Fincher; great-nephew, Michael Chase Fincher (Mandy); great-great nephew, Brady Golden Fincher; two cousins, Mary Alice Ball and Floriene Guthrie; and a host of friends.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Ernest Ball, Jr.; sister-in-law, Alice (Waymack) Ball; and a great-nephew, Frankie T. Beasler.

Services will be held at 1:00 p.m., on Tuesday, November 22, 2011 at Roller-McNutt Funeral Home, Conway. Burial will follow at Vilonia Cemetery, Vilonia.

Miss Amelia wishes to thank Dr. Larry Watkins, Dr. Mariann Harrington, and Dr. Edala Arpana and staff at Longevity Center – St. Vincent.
