Aged 104 Years
Stephens, Ark.- Columbus Williams, familiarly known as "Uncle Lum", negro ex-slave, aged 104 1-2 years, died at the home of his daughter, Sarah Sutton, here a few days ago. He was born December 4, 1941 (sic) near Mt. Holly and was a slave of the Smead family, ancestors of Lamar Smead, District Attorney of Camden. The ex-slave had nearly two hundred descendants, with six children living, a large number of grandchildren, 36 great grandchildren, 33 great great grandchildren, and 3 great great great grandchildren now living. For many years prior to his death the old man made baskets and sold them in the community. Just a feww months before his death he was able to read without the aid of glasses. He never attended school but one of the Smead sons taught him how to read. (Camden News - May 28, 1945)
