Charles "Tony" Rodgers, 69, of Vilonia, passed away Tuesday, January 29, 2008. Tony was born June 20, 1938, in Ingram, TX, a son of Verdie Pauline Nanny Rodgers, of Vilonia, and Loyas "Moon" Rodgers, deceased. Tony and his wife, Paulette Harlan Rodgers, were married 48 wonderful years. Tony is also survived by 3 children, Tonette Rodgers Cartwright of Mountain Home, Mike Rodgers of Vilonia, and Terri Rodgers Hancock of Vilonia. Tony was the brother to Gela Rodgers Torres of Tucson, AZ and James "Jimmy" Rodgers of Vilonia. Tony also leaves behind his 9 grandchildren, Rachel Garner, Richard Garner, Kalen Rodgers, Katie Rodgers, Jody Kemper, Adam Kemper, Emma Kemper, Jacob Kemper, and Aaron Kemper; 1 great-grandchild Kamren Halcrombe; 3 step-grandchildren Kari Evans, Lane Hancock, and Baylie Hancock; many treasured aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, and countless friends.

Tony moved to Vilonia in the 9th grade and graduated Vilonia High School, and served as Secretary and Salutatorian of the Class of 1956. Tony worked for the Highway Department, attended UCA-formerly Arkansas State Teachers College, and Draughns School of Business before beginning his 30-year career with the United States Postal Service, where he served as the Regional Manager of Fleet Operations. After a brief retirement, Tony then returned to the workforce and worked for Southwest Airlines until retiring for a second time after 9 years of service. Tony was a volunteer, coach, umpire, and advocate for the Vilonia Schools Athletic Program and the community of Vilonia his whole adult life. Tony served as the "Voice of the Eagles", the public address announcer for the Vilonia Eagles Football Games for 39 years. Tony then began his radio career, along side his brother Jimmy, as the "Color Commentator" for the Vilonia Eagle Football games every Friday night on Y107 radio. Tony was also a member of numerous organizations and clubs; Vilonia Booster Club, Vilonia Optimist Club, Vilonia Jaycees, NAPS, NARFE, AARP, Arkansas Sports Club, and a graduate of the Faulkner County Leadership Institute. Tony touched many lives in his life and leaves behind a rich legacy that his family will treasure. Tony had a special love for everyone he met and focused his life on making each person he came in contact with feel special. Tony would do anything for anybody at anytime. People didn't have to ask if Tony was a Christian, they knew it simply by the way he lived his life. Tony was a Baptist by faith. The world was a better place for all that his life touched.

Funeral services will be held at 3:00 pm on Saturday, February 2, 2008 at First Baptist Church in Vilonia, interment will follow at Vilonia Cemetery. Pallbearers: Howard Williams, Stanley Gordon Jr., Steve Austin, Dale Edwards, Steve McKissack, Stan Sisson, Preston Scroggin, and Ed Sellers. Honorary Pallbearers: Richard Garner, Adam Kemper, Danny Hancock, Roger Garner, Buddy Armstrong, Clarence Stocks, Doug Gallahar, and Freddie Weaver, and the numerous coaches he worked with over the years. Family visitation will be held on Friday, February 1, at Roller McNutt Funeral Home in Conway. In lieu of flowers, the family has set up "The Tony Rodgers Memorial Scholarship Fund" and donations may be made at any First State Bank branch.
