Obituary
A veteran commerical photographer who pioneered the picture-taking business in North Arkansas died in Batesville on Tuesday at the age of 84. He was Joe Robert Lewis, who operated a photography studio on Main Street here for nearly 50 years.
Born in Arkansas, he began his career in photography in 1889 at the age of 19. In the early part of his career he traveled throughout North Arkansas by mule and buggy making pictures in various communities. Before moving to Batesville, he maintained studios in Melbourne, Mount Pleasant and other towns. He had retired from the business last year.
Survivors include a daughter, Ethel Helen Goldberg of Newark and a brother, Will J. Lewis of Sweetwater, Texas.
Funeral services will be held Thursday afternoon at 2:30 in the Batesville Funeral Home with the Rev. David Conyers officiating. Mount Zion Masonic Lodge No. 10 will administer Masonic rites. Masons will serve as pallbearers.
