William Henry (Hank) Adams, 90, of Conway died Saturday (July 18, 2009) after a brief illness. He was born Oct. 29, 1918, in Conway to the late Charles Walter and Minnie Firestone Adams. He was preceded in death by brothers Charles, Ralph and Harvey Adams.
He is survived by nephews John W. Adams (Stacia) of Conway and Rudy
Adams (Jo) of Dallas, Tex., and niece Billie Jean Adams Kellar of Nashville, Tenn. Sisters-in-law, Odeal Adams of Conway and Willeen Adams of Little Rock.
Adams was a 1940 graduate of Arkansas State Teachers College, now UCA,
and did graduate work at the University of Texas at Austin. He served in the Army Air Corps during World War II and in the U. S. Air Force during the Korean Conflict, earning eight decorations and citations.
He was a Civil Service employee at several U. S. Air Force bases and noted national parks and also worked as a business administrator at Mount St. Mary's College in Los Angeles, Calif. He returned to Conway in 1968 and was assistant business administrator at Conway Regional Hospital before becoming UCA's first full-time director of alumni services in 1972. He modernized the alumni records and took the lead in establishing the university's first privately endowed scholarship programs.
Adams anonymously financially supported a number of students at UCA and one, Charles Stephens, after learning the identity of his benefactor, established a scholarship fund in Adams' name at UCA. Memorials may be made to the Hank Adams Scholarship Fund, UCA Foundation, Box 4986, Conway, AR 72033, or to Salem United Methodist Church, 1018 Salem Rd., Conway, AR 72032.
A graveside service will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Oak Grove Cemetery in Conway with the Rev. Jim McKay officiating. Viewing will be Monday until 8:00 p.m. Arrangements are under the direction of Roller-McNutt Funeral Home of Conway. 501-327-7727.
