According to Annie (Dollie), she was born in the Cherokee Nation tribe in Tahlequah, Oklahoma. There are no known records of this, however. Her children report that she could speak Cherokee.
Dollie married James Arthur Helton on Oct 17, 1907 at Coal Hill, Arkansas. Together they had 10 children: James Arnold, Pat Adrian, Dovie Lee, Nathan G., Irsie Irene, Nealy Lafaye, Opal Fern, Mary Alice, and Pete Junior.
