Pete J. Helton, 79, of Conway passed away Sunday, May 2, 2010.

Pete was of the Cherokee decent, born on July 23, 1930 to James A. Helton and Anna Belle Moody Helton, who was a full blood Cherokee Indian, born on a Cherokee Reservation. His father was also a Cherokee Indian.

Pete's mother told him when he was a young child that he was a Cherokee Indian, but never to tell anyone outside the family because she was afraid of harm coming to the family or removal to a reservation.

Pete was of the Baptist faith, an Army veteran of the Korean Conflict, and worked for the federal government for 35 years.

Pete was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Pat Helton and Nathan Helton,; and two sisters, Dovie Speights and Callie Lachowsky.

He is survived by two daughters, Phyllis Widen (Ted) and Sheila Moore (Lewis); one grandson, Chance Junyor (Keri), all of Plumerville; three sisters, Irene Posey, Opal Brewer and Alice Helton, all of Conway; and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Roller-McNutt Funeral Home in Conway, Elder Frank Blair officiating. Burial will follow at Oak Grove Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Pallbearers are nephews: Bill Helton, Harold Helton, Leon Helton, Larry Brewer, Jim Speights and Ronnie Brewer.
