MELBOURNE — J.D. Marchant, 97, of Melbourne died Saturday, Oct. 2, 2010, in Melbourne.
Born Jan. 29, 1913, in Lunenburg, he was the son of James Oscar Marchant and Nora T. Davidson.
He was united in marriage to Etha Mae King in November 1935 in Lunenburg. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II in the Philippine Islands. He worked in a cereal mill in Illinois, was employed at Miller's Hardware and was a farmer. He served as Izard County treasurer. He was of the Baptist faith and was an active member of Melbourne First Baptist Church, serving as a deacon for many years.
Survivors include two daughters, Doris Garlich of North Carolina and Judy Keith of Oklahoma; three grandchildren, David Frazier of North Carolina, Terry Doub of Arizona and Jill Trice of Oklahoma; seven great-grandchildren, Lucas Doub, Logan Doub, April Frazier Brooks, Mark Frazier, Allison Frazier, Landon Trice and Connor Trice; and several nephews and nieces.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; two brothers, Ashley Marchant and Jim Marchant; and four sisters.
The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Melbourne First Baptist Church. Burial will be in Lunenburg Cemetery under the direction of Eddie's Family Funeral Home in Melbourne.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 tonight.
Memorials may be made to Lunenburg Cemetery, c/o Bancorp South in Melbourne.
Pallbearers will be Jim Muncy, Y.D. Whitehurst, Don Smith, James Miller, Eudell Smith and Kirk Miller.
Honorary pallbearers are Jim Haley and Dean Floyd.
