James M. Roten, son of the late Samuel Daniel Roten and Arizona Mae Wammack Roten, was born August 29, 1933 in Sage, Arkansas. He departed this life May 31, 2016 in Melbourne, Arkansas at the age of 82 years, 9 months and 2 days. He spent his life as a son, brother, husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, provider and friend. He served in the United States Army, stationed in Germany. During his two years there, he earned the honor of soldier of the month. General Westmoreland presented him a watch. He attended college at Arkansas Tech in Russellville and University of Arkansas in Fayetteville, majoring in Engineering. While at Fayetteville he was a member of Acacia Fraternity, serving as Vice President during his senior year. He was active in community affairs, serving as President of North Little Rock Jaycees. Most of his working years were spent in Construction. He was proud to have worked on the first leg of Walt Disney World in Florida. At the time of his death, he was the retired owner of American Heating and Cooling in Horseshoe Bend. He was an active member of the Masonic Lodge and 32nd degree Mason. He was of the Church of Christ faith.
He is survived by two children: Toni Lawrence (Dwight) of Melbourne and Mike Roten (Judy) of Russellville; one stepson: Tommy Leach (Sarah) of Houston, Texas; three grandchildren: Jason Lawrence (Mandy) of Melbourne, Jeremy Lawrence (Candice) of Cabot and Krystal Brumfield (Morgan) of Texas; seven great grandchildren: Gabe Lawrence, Jenna Lawrence, Adia Lawrence, Austin Bell, Jade Brumfield, Tara Brumfield and John Brumfield and a host of other relatives and many good friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one wife: Ruth Leach Roten; one stepson: Greg Leach; one brother: Dean Roten and two sisters: Jennie Roten Edwards and Adah Mae Roten Dieter.
Funeral service and visitation will be Friday, June 3. Visitation will began at 12 noon and funeral service will follow at 2:00 p.m. at Howard Memorial Funeral Chapel in Melbourne with Danny Brightwell and Jeremy Lawrence officiating. Burial will be at Caney Springs Cemetery under the direction of Eddie's Family Funeral Home in Melbourne.
