JOHN MILLAR, A STAFF ATTORNEY AT THE Arkansas Administrative Office of the Courts, seemed the least likely candidate to commit suicide, family and colleagues agree.
"John loved his work and he was dedicated to our state's judges and court employees," J.D. Gingerich, AOC director, wrote following Millar's death. "John was in love with his family and especially his children. His office looked more like an elementary school art gallery than a law office."
But on Aug. 24, 2006, 39-year-old Millar, under home suicide watch, diverted the attention of his watcher, drove down the street from his Lonoke County home, exited his car, put a gun to his head and pulled the trigger.
Three days earlier, Millar had told his wife, Anne, and his psychologist that he was very concerned about his mental state and that he was going to "blow his head off" with a gun. Millar was checked into The Bridgeway hospital in North Little Rock that day and, despite sharing the same suicidal thoughts with the hospital's staff, was released less than 24 hours later.
