Dr. H.W. "Wib" Kamp, 90, of Denton passed away on Monday, December 24th. He was born on November 5, 1922 in Conway, Arkansas to Georgia Humberd Kamp and H.W. Kamp, Sr.
Wib grew up in Conway and Petit Jean Mountain, Arkansas. He graduated from Hendrix College in Conway in 1943 with a B.S. in government and graduated from Columbia University with a Masters and PhD in Public Law and Government. He was a veteran and served in the Air Corps as a cryptographer and was a Lt. in the Army during World War II, serving in North Africa. He began his career as a Professor of Political Science and Political Theory at Columbia University, then moved to Denton and North Texas State University (now University of North Texas) from 1949 until his retirement in 1987. Wib was very active in the university community serving as Chair of the Political Science Department and served on the Faculty Senate. He started the Oral History Collection and was instrumental in beginning the Political Science PhD program and the Masters of Public Administration program. He served on what is now the Public Utility Board for the City of Denton during the development of some of the current utility systems in the late 1950s and early 1960s and was the last surviving member of the Denton Charter Committee who authored the Denton city charter in 1959. He grew up attending the Methodist Church in Conway and had been a member of the First United Methodist Church of Denton since 1949.
Wib married his childhood sweetheart, Nancy Harton, on October 11, 1944. They shared 68 years together and enjoyed travelling and many events at University of North Texas, including both the women's and men's basketball games and numerous jazz, classical, and various other musical presentations. He also enjoyed being outdoors to hunt, fish, play golf, and go camping with his family. He especially enjoyed the mountains and streams in Arkansas, New Mexico, and Colorado.
Wib is survived by his wife, Nancy, daughter and son-in-law Pete Kamp and David Gosdin, son and daughter-in-law Bill and Kathy Kamp, and his brother and sister-in-law George and Marty Kamp. He is also survived by granddaughters Andrea Gary and fiancé Robert Edge, Nancy Wiggins and husband Chris, Vicky Kamp and fiancé David Mauldwin, Amy Gosdin, grandsons Daniel Gary, Matt Gosdin and his wife Sarah, and great-grandsons Brennan and Logan Wiggins. He was preceded in death by two daughters, Margaret Kamp and Linda Gary.
