Leo Kaufman age 87 passed from this life to be with his Lord and Savior on Thursday, March 20, 2014 in Shreveport, Louisiana after a long illness. Services will be on Tuesday, March 25, 2014 at First Baptist Church, Gentry, Arkansas at 2:00 p.m. with Rev. Jack Jones officiating. Burial will be at Gentry Cemetery. Visitation will be Monday, March 24, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Wasson Funeral Home in Siloam Springs, Arkansas.

He was born December 15, 1926 in Kingman County, Kansas, to Amos and Amelia Kaufman. The family lived in Kansas until they moved to Arkansas in 1936 and settled in the Gentry area.

Leo spent most of his life in Gentry until he and his wife Esther moved to Shreveport in August 2009 to be near family. He had been on the Gentry Fire Department for 30 years, serving as Chief for 28 of those years, until he retired from the Fire Department. He worked in several grocery stores in the area before serving as City Superintendent of Gentry, retiring in 1994.

He served on the Gentry School Board for 12 years and City Council for several years.

Leo was a faithful member of First Baptist Church in Gentry for 60 years. He was a deacon, Sunday School teacher and choir member. He was also a faithful member of Woodridge Baptist Church in Shreveport for 5 years.

Leo is preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, Vic, Richard and Eldon; two sisters Dorothy Trammell and Louise Whitaker. He is survived by his loving wife Esther married 65 years; two daughters Brenda Pennywell and husband Mike of Shreveport, Rhonda Gill and husband Ken of Plano, Texas; Granchildren Emmy Robinson and husband Lonnie, Katy Sears and husband Jerad, Amy Coffee and husband Blaine; great grandchildren Albany, Boston, Deacon and Kingston Sears and Gillian Majo; step grandchildren include Michael, Matthew and Jay Pennywell; step great grandchildren Kasey Gibson and husband Damien, Brooke, Bailey and Kaden Pennywell; step great great grandchildren Mason and Molly Gibson and Laykin Pennywell. He is also survived by one brother Harry Kaufman and wife Pat; two sisters Opal Moomey and Ellen Garvin and husband Glenn; three sisters in law; Lilly, Faye and Jane Kaufman and a host of nieces and nephews.

The family wishes to thank the Doctors, nurses and staff members on 2nd floor Willis Knighten South Hospital and LifeCare Shreveport for their loving care.
