Memorial services for Jim Harrell Gist, 87, of Ruston, La. will be 10 a.m. Monday, Sept. 5, 2005 in the Burkhalter Chapel of Trinity United Methodist Church in Ruston.
Officiating will be Dr. Fred Wideman, Rev. Rolly Walker and Rev. Andy Hurst.
Burial will precede the memorial in Oak Grove Cemetery in Conway.
Mr. Gist was born Jan. 36, 1918, in Conway to W. Harrell and Leah Herndon Gist.
His parents, his brother and a sister precede him in death.
He was a graduate of Arkansas State Teachers College in Conway in 1938. He attended the University of Illinois, then moved to Joliet, Ill. to work in the defense industry in 1941 arriving the day before the Pearl Harbor attack. In 1942, he enlisted in the Army Air Corps. After training, he was sent to Hondo, Texas Navigation Base from which he was commissioned a second lieutenant. After service in the European theatre during World War II, he attended University of Texas in Austin, receiving his master of science degree.
Mr. Gist was a longtime resident of Ruston and a longtime member of Trinity United Methodist Church. He was retired from Arkla Gas after 34 years.
He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Marion Gist of Ruston; children, Barbara McCown of Colorado Springs, Col. David Gist of New Orleans; sister, Margaret Gist of Galena Park, Texas; granddaughter, Allison McCandless and husband Sean of Orlando, Fla.; great-grandchildren, Faith, Jonathan, Gabriel and Noah McCandless, all of Orlando.
Memorials may be made to Trinity UMC or Lions Club Internationl, 300 West 22nd Street, Oak Brook, Ill. 60523-8842.
Visitation was Thursday at Kilpatrick Funeral Home of Ruston.
