Log Cabin Democrat Story

A vision for a Faulkner County fallen officers memorial is beginning to take shape, now that an artist's conception is finished.
Lt. Jack Pike said artist Robbie Fulmer of Conway donated the drawing, which he completed from a rough sketch Pike provided.

The memorial will honor past and future Faulkner County officers who died in the line of duty. The three officers who have died in the line of duty are Detective Jim Wooley, William E. Hathaway and Oscar L. Honea.

Pike said he had been doing research into a memorial before Wooley died in 2003. After Wooley's death he devoted as much time as he could to the project.

"Over time it became apparent the average person didn't realize any deputies had been killed. They thought Jim was the first. It became apparent we needed (a memorial). Conway (Police Department) has had one for a while."

Pike said the sheriff's office wanted "a place that is actually usable" with benches and some type of garden setting.

The proposed location for the memorial will be on the west side of the Faulkner County Detention Center. The memorial will take up about a 30 by 40 foot area, Pike said. It will include a sandstone wall about seven-feet tall that tapers on the sides. Four granite slabs engraved with quotations will be on the wall, and a granite sheriff's star will be in the center of the granite slabs. In front of the wall will be a granite podium with a plaque on top explaining what the memorial is, and the fallen officers' names will be engraved on the podium, along with the dates they died.

Two granite benches will face the memorial, and the area will have shrubs and flowers. A sidewalk leading to the memorial will be made up of fund-raising bricks, which will be available for purchase by certified police officers, Pike said.

The memorial will cost $10,000. Donations may be made to any First Security Bank or at the sheriff's office.

Pike said he is not sure what the quotations on the memorial will be, but he shared one he likes. A quotation engraved on a marker at the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial says "It is not how these officers died that made them heroes, it is how they lived."

Wooley died Aug. 5, 2003, from injuries he suffered while working a theft case the previous day. Hathaway died Aug. 5, 1931, while serving a warrant in Mayflower. The warrant was for theft of peaches.

Pike said when he noticed Wooley died on the same day of the year as Hathaway, "I literally went back and double-checked," and the date of Hathaway's death is accurate.

Honea was ambushed and killed Oct. 22, 1914, by an escapee from the Faulkner County jail he was chasing in the Lollie area, Pike said.
