Samuel Heiligers was the son of Isaac and Clara (Klaartje) Van Trommel Heiligers. He was born about 1848 in Rotterdam, Holland and immigrated with his family to America around 1850.

By 1860 the Heiliger family was in Memphis, Tennessee where there was a large Jewish population. Isaac was a merchant here and during the War between the States joined the 3rd Battalion Tennessee Infantry, CSA.

Isaac and Clara died during a yellow fever epidemic in 1873 and are buried in the Baron Hirsch Jewish Cemetery. Samuel's sister and brother-in-law had moved to Conway, Arkansas and invited Samuel to join them. Here he operated a grocery and general mercantile business on Front street.

One of his customers was Edward Merriman who had a daughter named Mary, also known as Minnie. Even though she was 26 years younger than Samuel they were married in 1892. The Heiligers were the parents of four sons, Edward, Charles, Sam, and Isaac and a daughter who died when she was only a few days old.

Samuel and Minnie Heiligers were very involved in the business and civic affairs of Conway. In January of 1921 Samuel sold his business interests and retired at the age of 73.

He died two weeks later.
