Dr. Claude M. Walters Sr., 87, of Fayetteville died Sunday, April 18, 2004, at his home. He was born June 6, 1916, in Evansville, Ind., to Claude C. and Ruby Walters.

Survivors include his wife, Billye Ruth Walters of Fayetteville; two sisters, Martha Hollencamp of Evansville, Ind., and Ruth Toole Barnes of Ploenix, Ariz.; one brother, Herbert Walters of Evansville, Ind., and one son, Claude M. Walters Jr. of Fayetteville; two grandsons, Jon Claude Walters of Fayetteville, and Patrick Alan Walters of Springdale.

Dr. Walters was an optometrist in Camden for 40 years before retiring to Fayetteville. He graduated from the Southern School of Optometry in Memphis, Tenn., as salutatorian of his class. After training in New York, be was one of the first optometrists to introduce contact lenses in Arkansas. He started the Camden Boys Club and was acknowledged as director emeritus. He also managed a professional boxer in Camden. He also founded the Circle C Riding Club in Camden and was a proud Arabian horse owner. He also founded the Cherokee Antique Motorcycle Club in Texas and served as secretary-treasurer for many years. He restored Indian motorcycles. Dr. Walters served as president and secretary-treasurer emeritus of the Arkansas Optometric Association. He was very active in legislative affairs in Little Rock and Washington, D.C. Dr. Walters was also a photographer for the Ouachita Citizen newspaper in Camden, and he was the Camden assistant coroner.

Graveside service will to at 10 a.m. today at Son's Chapel Cemetery in Fayetteville with the Rev. Steve Cook officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Moore's Chapel in Fayetteville.
