Mrs. Madge Wade Clayton of Conway died today (June 11, 1999).
Born in Little Rock, a daughter of Oscar Jefferson and Clara Davies Wade, she was president of KCON and a retired Latin teacher. She taught at Stamps, El Dorado and Conway High Schools as well as Ouachita College (now Ouachita Baptist University).
She graduated from high school in Texarkana and received a bachelor's degree from Ouachita College. She later earned a master's degree in Latin from Columbia University in New York.
She was a member of the First Baptist Church, where she was a pianist in the Junior Department for 25 to 30 years. She was also an organist and assistant organist. She was involved in numerous clubs and organizations, including the Conway Shakespeare Club, the Orpheus Club, Chapter E of PEO, the Twentieth Century Club and the American Classical League.
She was also a former board member of the Community Arts Association and the Faulkner County Library Board as well as a board member of the Faulkner County Historical Society.
She was the widow of James Edgar Clayton.
She had no immediate survivors.
Funeral services will be 3:30 p.m. Sunday at Roller-McNutt Funeral Home with Dr. John Shell officiating. Burial will be in Oak Grove Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Tom Day, Dr. Patrick Farmer, Dr. Jefferson D. Ferris, Dr. James H. Flanagin, Ritchie D. Howell, Jay Jennings, Bill Johnson and James W. Schneider. Honorary pallbearers will be former employees of radio station KCON, William C. Adkisson and Dr. Doug Poindexter.
