Nancy Louise Head, age 91, of The Woodlands, Texas, passed away on August 6, 2015. Nancy was born to parents Noel Carr Beard and Relda Mae Kitchens on November 14, 1923, in Moro Bay, Arkansas. In 1941, Nancy graduated at the head of her class at Warren High School. She continued her education at Arkansas AandM College and later completed her bachelor's degree at the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville. Nancy married Robert Collier Head on August 18, 1946, and had two children, Sara Jane and Robert.
A career educator, Nancy taught in Union County public schools for nearly 40 years, including 22 years at Parkers Chapel Elementary. Her commitment to education continued into her retirement, when she put in countless hours as an adult literacy tutor and as a volunteer at public libraries in both Arkansas and Texas.
Though Nancy never even rode on an airplane until she was in her sixties, she discovered a passion for travel after her retirement. In her frequent trips abroad and throughout the US, she saw more of the world than many people see in a lifetime. She was particularly thrilled to be one of the first Americans to visit East Germany shortly after the fall of the Berlin Wall.
A longtime member of Parkers Chapel United Methodist Church, Nancy belonged to The Woodlands United Methodist Church after she moved with her daughter to Texas. She is survived by her children Robert Head and Jane Ahrens; grandchildren Thomas and Ronald Head, Stephanie Waller, and Katy Avenson; and great-grandchildren Claire and Stella Waller. She was preceded in death by husband Robert Head, sister Bettie Pate, and grandson Chris Head.
Visitation will take place at Bailey Funeral Home on 400 N. College Ave. in El Dorado from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Saturday, August 8, 2015. Graveside service will be held at Rest Haven Memorial Gardens in Norphlet at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, August 9, 2015. Services under the direction of Bailey Funeral Home, El Dorado, AR.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Barton Library, 200 East 5th Street, El Dorado AR 71730 or The Woodlands United Methodist Church Mission Fund, 2200 Lake Woodlands Drive, The Woodlands, TX 77380, make checks payable to TWUMC Foundation Mission Endowment in memory of Nancy Head.
