BELLA VISTA — Betty Rowton Holt, 90, formerly of Prairie Village, Kan., Sioux City, Iowa, and recently of Bella Vista, Ark., passed away Sept. 10, 2011. Betty was born April 8, 1921, in St. Louis, Mo., to parents Geraldine and Chester Rowton.
She graduated from Joplin (Mo.) High School and the University of Kansas, where she was a member of Pi Beta Phi. For seven summers she was a camper and a hiking counselor at Cheley Colorado Camps. During WWII, she was a radio announcer and writer for a Kansas City radio station. She later obtained her master's of arts degree from the University of Missouri — Kansas City.
As a loving and supportive mother, she took on roles in Cub Scoots and Girl Scouts. She and her husband, Joe, were charter members of the Homestead Country Club and the Village Presbyterian Church, where she served as a Sunday school teacher, a deacon and president of the women's association. Later, she was an elder of the Sioux City Presbyterian Church.
As a member of the Bella Vista Community Church, she served as tutor, deacon, a leader of Stephen Ministry and a member of the visitation committee. She was a national director of Pi Beta Phi, a member of P.E.O. and a high school English teacher. She was a certified graduate level travel agent, travel group escort and co-owner of a travel agency. She also served as a co-anchor for Channel 16 Television in Bela Vista. She was a faithful volunteer for Guidepost prayer line.
Betty enjoyed public speaking, bridge, gardening, reading and travel. She will be remembered as a loving wife and mother and a great friend. She will be missed by all who ever met or knew her.
Betty will be best remembered for her love and devotion to her husband and children, her engaging personality and for her first-person book reviews.
Betty was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, Joe Holt in 1994.
She is survived by her children, David Holt (Pamela) and Betsy Schwartz (Bob); and her grandsons, Jason and Taylor Holt and Brad and Andy Schwartz.
Visitation will be from 1:30 to 2 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 15, 2011, with funeral service at 2 p.m. at the Bella Vista Funeral Home Chapel, 2258 Forest Hills Blvd., Bella Vista, Ark. Burial will be at the Bella Vista Cemetery.
