Roger Vickers

Marion County Sheriff Roger Vickers, age 67, of Yellville, Arkansas passed away Thursday, July 23, 2015 at Hospice of the Hills in Harrison, Arkansas.

Roger Vickers was born October 28, 1947 in Harrison, Arkansas. He was the son of the late Genevieve Richardson Davidson and Don Davidson of Harrison, Arkansas and the late Leasle Vickers of Marshall, Arkansas.

Sheriff Vickers is survived by his wife, Joan Reed (Walters) Vickers, and their two children: Weston Reed Vickers, and Katherine Genevieve Vickers. He is also survived by his son Roger Brent Vickers (Amanda), of Lowell, Arkansas; and Brent’s mother, Jackie (Rushing) Worman of Conway, Arkansas; and their grandchildren Sarah and Stevie Vickers.

He is survived by his brother, Joe (JaNell) Davidson of Harrison, Arkansas and his sister, Lisa (Vickers) Parks (Tim) of Marshall, Arkansas. He leaves behind many beloved nieces and nephews as well.

Roger graduated from Bergman High School in 1965 and enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. He proudly served his country in the Vietnam War and was honorably discharged at the rank of E-5 Sergeant. During his service in the military, he earned numerous medals of Honor and was chosen as an escort for the Nixon family at the 1969 Presidential Inauguration in Washington, D.C.

Following his military service, he joined the ranks of the Arkansas State Police in 1972. He served with the state police in numerous Troops across the state (Troops A, C, E, F, L and I). He retired from his Arkansas State Police career as a Lieutenant/Assistant Troop Commander of Troop I in Harrison, Arkansas in March of 2008.

He was elected Sheriff of Marion County in November 2008 where he has served unopposed until his passing. He dedicated his entire career to law enforcement. He has served in Marion County for the past thirty years.

Roger was an avid outdoorsman. His favorite activities were deer and turkey hunting, which was a passion he shared with his children.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Visitation will be held Tuesday, July 28, 2015 at the Yellville-Summit School Multi-Purpose Facility in Yellville, Arkansas from 4:00 – 8:00 pm.

Funeral Services will be held Wednesday, July 29, 2015 at the Yellville-Summit School Multi-Purpose Facility in Yellville, Arkansas at 10:30 am with Pastor Dick Shinkle officiating.

Serving as pallbearers is the Arkansas State Police Honor Guard.

Additional pallbearers are Arkansas State Police Sgt. Gregg Alexander, Fred Burrow, Arkansas Game and Fish Officer Sgt. Brice Smith, Captain G.B. Harp (retired Arkansas State Police), Mayor Shawn Lane, and Captain Bill Hilligoss (Marion County Sheriff’s Department).

Other honorary pallbearers include the officers and staff and the Marion County Sheriff’s Department and the Yellville-Summit School District Board Members.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to the First Presbyterian Church of Yellville, Arkansas, PO Box 6, Yellville, AR 72687; or Pleasant Ridge Cemetery, c/o Fred Burrow, 4727 Highway 14 S, Yellville, AR 72687; or Hospice of the Hills Hospice House, PO Box 1927, Harrison, AR 72602.

Services are under the direction of Burns Funeral Home of Yellville, Arkansas.
