BUCHANAN, Ellen CRAWFORD - Died, at the home of her son-in-law, Rev. Peter Carnahan, one-half mile east of this city on Sunday, August 25, 1895 after an illness of several months, Mrs. Ellen Buchanan, aged 88 years. This venerable lady was the widow of the late Rev. John Buchanan who was one of the pioneer preachers of Northwest Arkansas and who preceded his wife to the "Realms of the blest" some years ago. The remains were taken Monday to Prairie Grove where they were laid to their last long rest beside those of her husband. Mrs. Buchanan was the mother of Mrs. Peter Carnahan of this city and Mrs. F.R. Earle of Fayetteville. She has lived a long life filled with good deeds and in her death the community has lost a noble christian woman, her daughters a loving mother and her grandchildren their best and sweetest counselor. Many friends extend to them heartiest sympathy in their sad loss.

Died, Aug. 25th, at the residence of her son-in-law, Rev. P. Carnahan, Mrs. Ellen Buchanan in the 87th year of her age. Mrs. Ellen Buchanan {nee Crawford} was born in Lincoln county, Tenn. Oct. 2nd, 1808. She came to Cane Hill, Washington county, then the Territory of Arkansas, in company with her two brothers, James and Hay Crawford, and other emigrants in the year 1828. She professed faith in Christ in her girlhood and united with the C.P. church in Tenn. In 1828 she united by letter with the Cane Hill congregation, the first organized church of any denomination in Washington county, or in Northwest Arkansas, north of the Boston mountains. She was also a member of the first Sabbath-School organized on Cane Hill, and the first, perhaps, ever organized in the State. On her death her membership was still with the Cane Hill congregation, making her eventful life and membership in this congregation in all 67 years. Sept. 16th, 1830 she was married to John Buchanan who afterwards was licensed and ordained by the Arkansas Presbytery a minister of the Gospel; whose long and faithful life and work in the Presbytery and throughout the State, until his death years ago, makes him still of precious memory. To them were born ten children, seven sons and three daughters. Five of these, three sons and two daughters had gone before. Seventeen years ago she came to make her home with us. All of these were declining years to her, physically; but, down to the last two years of her life, when her mind began to fail, she was still in the Christian warfare, "Warring a good warfare," and with a faith increasingly great and unshaken, pressing forward and upward to the crown and reward of all those faithful to the Master. P. Carnahan.
