Charles R. Black, Jr. of Corning died Friday, Jan 18, 2002 at his residence. He was 88.

He was born July 11, 1913, in Corning, the son of the late Charles R. Black, Sr. and Bess Jane Graham Black On Nov 24, 1938, he married Barbara Margaret Stier. A 1935 graduate of the University of Arkansas, he played on the first U of A football team to beat Texas, winning the Southwest Conference in 1933. He was the oldest living former Razorback football player. He was an early pioneer in farming. The J.W. Black Lumber Company was founded by his grandfather in 1895. He was the former president and co-owner of Black's Building Center. He was a member of the St. Joseph Catholic Church in Corning.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Barbara Margaret Stier Black and two sons, William P. and Charles R. Black.

Survivors include two daughters, Katherine J. Black, Lexington, KY; Elizabeth A. Black, New Orleans, LA; four sons, John G. Black and Robert J. Black, both of Corning; Thomas Black, Las Vegas, Nev.; James D Black, Germantown, TN; a brother, M. Graham Black, San Francisco, CA; 16 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Services were held Jan 21, at the St. Joseph Catholic Church in Corning with Rev. John Marconi officiating. Burial followed in the Corning Cemetery.

Ermert Funeral Home, Inc. in Corning was in charge of arrangements.
