Three children die in fire
WINSLOW (AP) — Three children died in a fire that apparently started from a candle the children were told they were not allowed to have, state police said.
Four children, all siblings, wanted to camp overnight under a camper that fits on the back of a pick up truck but was on the ground, said Bill Sadler, spokesman for the Arkansas State Police.
"One girl asked for a candle. Her Mom told her no but she apparently took it anyway," Sadler said.
At about 3 a.m. Sunday, the mother of the children saw flames from the camper, about 250 yards up Big Springs Road from the house. When authorities got to the scene, Samuel Scott, 11, was trying to fight the fire. He suffered burns to his hands and arms and smoke inhalation, He was taken to Washington Regional Medical Center for treatment.
Inside the camper, Washington County sheriff's deputies found Sarah Jane Scott, 13, Anthony Christopher Eiland, 7, and Amanda Christine Eiland, 5. All were dead at the scene, Sadler said. No specific causes of death were immediately available.
Based on interviews with the surviving boy and the mother, state police believe the fire was an accident, Sadler said.
