Funeral services were held at the Davis Special cemetery, Thursday afternoon, January 23, for W A Johnson, age 92, early settler of that community, who passed away suddenly at the home of his son, Albert Johnson, near Shirley, Wednesday morning.
Funeral services were conducted by the Rev. George W Norman, pastor of the Quitman Baptist church.
Although almost blind for the past several years, Mr Johnson seemed as well as usual and death came shortly after he had finished his breakfast and sat by the fireside.
He was born in Jackson county September 20, 1854. He first married in 1875. His wife passed away a few years following their marriage leaving a son, Robert. Two daughters by this marriage died in childhood. Late in 1887 Mr Johnson married to Mrs. Mary Brock to which six children were born.
He settled in Van Buren county in 1886 and had spent most of his life in the community in which he died. He was a kind and patient husband and father and an obliging and agreeable neighbor, who enjoyed the friendship and respect of all.
Early in life Mr Johnson professed faith in Chirst and united with the Methodist church remaining a faithful member until death.
In addition to the son Albert, with whom he made his home, Mr Johnson is survived by four other sons, Will of Palestine, Henry of Edgemont; Tom of Heber Springs and Robert of Lepanto; one daughter, Minnie of Lepanto. Also several grand-children and other relatives.
Interment was in the Davis cemetery in charge of the Olmstead Funeral Home.
