A 50-year-old Hampton man, Willie T. Sumler, was found dead Sunday morning in his auto parked off South Scales Street in southeast Camden. Coroner Jack Barger said an autopsy showed that Sumler died of asphyxiation. Residents in the area told officers that they noticed the car for several hours before getting suspicious. They reported that the engine had been running for at least six hours before police were notified. Barger said Sumler apparently fell asleep and died when he was overcome by the fumes from the exhaust. Barger said the car had no tail pipe. Mrs. Versie Parker of 861 Visor Street told police that she saw the car when it pulled into her yard and turned around about 11 p.m. Saturday. She said there were two people in the car at that time. Police said they found no one else or signs that anyone else had been there. (Camden News - March 16, 1970)
