Briana Lee (Davis) Arford the daughter of Carl Gene Davis as well as James Gray and Vanessa Gray.


Briana Arford, 24, of Newport, Arkansas, died Sunday, Apr. 1, 2007, at Sedgwick in a car-train accident.

She came from Black Rock, having lived in Newport the past two years after moving from Batesville. She was valedictorian of her 2001 graduating class of Black Rock High School and a graduate of Lyon College. She was employed at Newport Special School as a seventh-grade Advanced Placement teacher. She was a Baptist.

She is survived by her parents, James and Vanessa Gray of Sedgwick and Carl Davis of Paragould; a son, Austin Drake of the home; a step-daughter, Courtney Arford of Jonesboro; brothers, Travis Davis of Sedgwick and Eric Davis of Paragould; sisters, Cassie McFerrin of Valdosta, Ga., Shana Gray of Walnut Ridge, Whitney Gray of Sedgwick, Pam Davis of Louisiana and Dee Smith of McAlister, Okla.; grand-parents, Jim and Linda Funchess of Black Rock, Jerry and Donna Greer of Jonesboro and Carl Davis, Sr. of Paragould.

Burial was in Old Military Cemetery near Sedgwick under the direction of House-Gregg Funeral Home.

Accident claims one life

A car-train accident on Sunday night resulted in the death of a Black Rock native, according to a report released by the Arkansas State Police.

Briana L. Bopp Arford, 24, of Newport was killed when the 2002 Hyundai Elantra she was driving was struck by an eastbound Burlington Northern Santa Fe train at the County Road 635 railroad crossing in Sedgwick.

The accident occurred at approximately 5:05 p.m., and Arford was pronounced dead at the scene by Lawrence County Deputy Coroner Chris Warden.

A 2001 valedictorian of Black Rock High School, Arford was a teacher at Newport Special School. Funeral services will be Thursday afternoon at 2 at House-Gregg Chapel in Walnut Ridge.
