Amos Owen Bridges, 89, of Black Rock, died Jan. 9, 2008, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.

Born July 18, 1918, in Black Rock, he was the son of Ira and Elva McBride Bridges. A lifelong resident of Black Rock, he worked as a carpenter for Clark Construction for over 40 years and was a member of the Black Rock Methodist Church. He was a lifetime member of the Black Rock VFW Post 11300.

He was a World War II Army veteran, serving in the South Pacific with the 25th Infantry Division at Guadalcanal, Hawaii, New Zealand and the Georgian Islands.

Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Alma Jearelene (Smith) Bridges, whom he married May 27, 1944, in Powhatan; a daughter, Carolyn Bridges, Black Rock; two sons, Jim Bridges and wife Judy, Pocahontas, and Bobby Bridges and wife Linda, Imboden; a brother, Matthew Bridges, Rockford, Ill.; three grandchildren, Bridget Bridges, Brad Bridges and Tim Hudson; and three great-grandchildren.

Funeral was Saturday at 2 p.m. in Higginbotham Chapel with Rev. Bob McMillon officiating. Burial was in Kelly Cemetery, near Imboden, under the direction of Higginbotham Funeral Service.
