June 25, 1894 - October 29, 1968
Miss Jewel Burgess, Strong, died at noon Tuesday in a local hospital following a lengthy illness. Born in Strong, the daughter of John W. and Josephine Howard Burgess, she was for over 40 years a teacher in the Southeast Arkansas Schools. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Strong. Survivors include four sisters, Mrs. I. E. Vestal and Miss Sally Burgess, both of Strong, Mrs. John W. Johnson, San Juan, Tex. and Mrs. J. H. Nunnally, Bastrop. Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. Wednesday at the First Baptist Church of Strong with the Rev. Hugh Nelson and the Rev. S. M. Williamson officiating. Interment will follow in the Strong Cemetery under the direction of Rumph Mortuary. Pallbearers are Bobby Joe Turbeville, Calvin Eudy, Joe Maroney, Turner Vestal, Douglas Fitzgerald and Kenneth Nelson. The body will be at the church for two hours prior to time for services. The family has requested that memorials be made to the Heart Fund. (The El Dorado Times - October 30, 1968)
