TOWNES, Charles Lewis - {from The Springdale News} Charles Lewis Townes, age 63 years, committed suicide early Wednesday morning at his home on Crutcher street by drinking carbolic acid. He arose early, as usual, and went to a local drug store and purchased a four ounce bottle of the acid to be used, presumably, in his work as painter and paperhanger. On returning home for his breakfast he told his wife that he was going to kill himself and poured part of the acid in a glass preparatory to drinking. Mrs. Townes persuaded him to give her the glass and while she was gone to the yard to pour out the acid he poured what was left in the bottle in another glass and succeeded this time in swallowing about two ounces of the poison. When Mrs. Townes returned he said, "Claud, I sure took it." Carl, a 12-year-old son, was sent for assistance and returned with Wyatt, an older son, and a doctor. Efforts were made to revive Mr. Townes but it was too late and he died in a few minutes.
