He was the son of Benajah and Mary Daniel Croom. He married Sara Jane Pearson in 1866. He served under Col John S. McGarver in the Civil War and was wounded at the battle of Corinth with a minnie ball in the shoulder. He was captured at Big Black Station in 1863 and was taken to Fort Delaware and later Point Lookout MD. In Jan 1864 he was exchanged in a prisoner swap. He promptly re-enlisted under Capt Wiley Jones for the rest of the war.
He built a grist mill and a town grew up around it and was called Croom's Mill. When the post office was established it became know as Oxford. He served in the AR senate 1897-96 but was defeated for a second term. He donated the land for the Oxford Cemetery.
