KENNAMER, Stephen Isom - {from Elm Springs} We were very much shocked to hear of the death of Prof. Kennamer. Ought we not to stop for a moment and consider that we are born to die? The bereaved wife and children have our heartfelt sympathy.

Prof. S.I. Kennamer, principal of our public schools, died at his home in this city Sunday morning of pneumonia. He had been sick only a week and his death was a shock to his host of friends. The expressions of sorrow and regret were universal. The funeral was held from the residence at 10:30 Monday morning under the auspices of the local lodge, I.O.O.F., devotional exercises being conducted by Eld. J.H. Amacker of the Baptist church. A procession was formed at the residence and to the solemn notes of Gen. Sheridan's Funeral March, the cortege marched to the cemetery where the remains were laid peacefully away. Never was a funeral in Springdale more largely attended than this one. The business houses of the city were closed and the people turned out en masse to do honor to the memory of one whom they esteemed so highly. The funeral procession was a half mile in length and it is estimated there were 700 people in attendance. Prof. Kennamer was our friend as he was the friend of every one who knew him and his pleasant visits will be sadly missed. Pilot and Headlight of Morrilton are requested to please copy.

Mrs. Ollie Kennamer, widow of the late Prof. Kennamer, will move to Conway Co. in a few days, just as soon as she can get her business affairs straightened up. We regret to see her leave but hope she will find comfort and consolation in her new home.

Stephen Isom Kennamer first saw the light of day on November 11, 1859 in the state of Alabama. In 1870 when he was only eleven years old his father emigrated to Arkansas and settled in Conway County. Here Prof. Kennamer grew up to manhood. As his parents were not wealthy he obtained only such an education as the common schools of the county afforded, supplemented by a session at the school in Russelville. With a mind thirsting for knowledge, however, he increased his store of learning by most assiduous study at home, which practice he kept up to the day of his death. He also attended a summer term - between the sessions of his own school - at the State University. In this way he had acquired a fairly good education. He married very early in life, being only a little over nineteen years of age. His first wife was Miss Margaret McMahan of Conway County, Ark. She dying in the early part of 1890 he married again on February 22, 1891, Miss Ollie Gamble, who outlives him. Selecting teaching as a profession Prof. Kennamer strove with uncommon energy and zeal to qualify himself for his life work and to build up the school of which he was the efficient and appreciated head. Having been selected as the Principal of the Springdale Public School he came to this place Sept. 3, 1892 and took charge and from that time on he seemed to have no thought but for his school. Never did any man strive harder to be faithful to his trust. Indeed his untimely death was doubtless largely due to his fidelity - standing by his post of duty when he ought to have been in the physicians hands. He was attacked with bilious pneumonia on Jan. 6 and notwithstanding all that trained medical skill and affection could do, after a week's struggle was forced to succumb, dying at 2 a.m. Jan. 14, 1894, leaving a faithful devoted wife and four children, with a countless host of friends to mourn his loss. He was a member of the Odd Fellow and Masonic fraternities and was for some time Master of the Lodge of Masons to which he belonged. Though not a member of the church he had for a long time entertained a hope in Christ and his conversation and deportment were "such as become the Gospel of Christ." J.H.A.
