MARTIN, William S. – After an illness of only a few days, William Martin passed away Saturday morning at six o’clock. The sad news was a shock to the entire community. Funeral services were held at the home at ten o’clock Sunday morning conducted by Rev. Dart, of the Adventist Church, and the remains were interred in Bluff Cemetery. The pall bearers were his old friends.

“Uncle Billy”, as he was familiarly known, was born in Indiana in September 1837. On July 7, 1859, he was united in marriage to Miss Nancy Johns, who was also an Indianian by birth. To this union three children were born, all of whom survive, Mrs. Jack Hewitt, of Springdale, William F. of Portland, Oregon and James E. of Springdale.

The faithful wife and daughter and son, Dr. J. E., were by his side from Wednesday noon until death called. The other son was unable to reach here in time for the funeral, but is coming to comfort his aged mother.

Mr. Martin needs no words to tell what his life has been, his death was a type of his long useful life –peaceful and unfaltering fearless and reassured of eternal rest. He was ready to lay down his burdens, but his only regret was leaving his wife, with whom he had lived for more than fifty years, without his care.

They had enjoyed youth together. They had lived through fair and stormy weather. But death has called and parted they must be.

Till the last trump shall sound and unite them for all eternity.

MARTIN, Nancy JOHNS – Mrs. William Martin – On May thirteenth, at nine o’clock in the evening, the death angel again visited the home of the late William Martin and this time it took the devoted wife to join the husband who had gone before on the thirteenth of January.

Mrs. Martin’s maiden name was Nancy Johns. She was born in Indiana February 27, 1844 and was united in marriage to William Martin on July 7, 1859. Their married life was a long and unusually happy one.

Now both parents are gone, leaving the two sons, William of Santa Ana, California, James E. and daughter, Sarah, wife of J. M. Hewitt of this place. In the loss of the mother they have also lost the home; for home is not home if mother’s not there.

Mrs. Martin has been a constant, though patient sufferer since her husband’s death and many times expressed a desire to go. At one time it seemed the end was near. She said, “All my trials are over”, but lingered several days –now.

“All her labors ended –earth’s lead crown laid down
Love has called her to receive Love’s crown;
No more in the gloom of fading years
Will she tread earth’s vale, shadowed with tears.”

If it were not for the sorrowing ones who are left, it would be sweet to think of her as resting so close by the side of him with whom she walked for more than half a century.

Of Mrs. Martin it can be truly said, she hath not lived in vain; no one went hungry from her door and a smile and kind word greeted every one, even in her deepest suffering and sorrow. The grandchildren of whom there are only four living here, the other two in California, will greatly miss her for to them there was no place like Grandma Martin’s. Everything that could be done to make children happy was done there.

It is not only the members of the family who feel the great loss, as her friends were many among both old and young.
