SPRINGDALE — Mary Virginia Jones Hewitt, 87, died Sept. 28, 2012, at Northwest Medical Center-Springdale.
Mary was born in Springdale to Walter and Grace Moneyhun Jones. She attended and graduated Springdale Schools in 1942. In high school, at 5'1", she excelled in basketball. Mary was inducted into the Springdale High School Athletic Hall of Fame in 2011.
Mary worked at First National Bank until she married her longtime high school boyfriend, Harold Dean Hewitt in 1944. After his service in the Air Force in WW II, they returned to Springdale.
Mary always enjoyed her bridge groups, entertaining and going all-out decorating for Christmas. In earlier years and still of late, she loved going shopping, movies and out to dinner. Mary was a lifelong Razorback fan and would never miss a Razorback game. She loved trips to their Branson condo and going to the shows. In later years, she also enjoyed several trips to New York and Las Vegas with her daughter and friends and family. She was a member of First United Methodist Church in Springdale.
Mary was preceded in death by her parents and siblings: John Earl Jones, Helen Cravens, Gladys Harris, Maxine Dial, Alice Dean Brogdon.
She is survived by her husband, Harold Dean Hewitt of the home, daughter, Merry Lee Phillips and her husband, Jim; grandchildren, Paige, Payne and Pierce Phillips; two nieces, Carol Whitten and Judith Rodgers; and a nephew, Phil Dial.
Funeral service will be held at First United Methodist Church today, Oct. 2, at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Judy VanHoose officiating. Burial will follow at Bluff Cemetery.
