ROGERS — Dorothy O'Brien, 93, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her children, on Oct. 15, 2008. "Dotto" was born July 12, 1915, in Chicago. She was married to John F. O'Brien for more than 50 years.

She is survived by her five children, Lisa, Kevin, Mary, Patty and Tess; her seven grandchildren, Mitra, Gabriel, Adam, Sasha, Chris, Jacqui and Mikhail; and her two great-grandchildren, Maia and Cecily.

Known for her creativity and artistic flair, she was a loving mom and an active career woman. Dorothy had a great sense of adventure and fun. Her children fondly remember childhood camping trips in which they traveled widely, dressed in matching outfits. Dotto had her own sense of style, with her hand-painted shoes and jewelry and wonderful hats and capes. She created a lovely home in which the decor changed with the seasons, and every element reflected her artistic imagination. During holidays especially, Dotto would make the house, table setting and meals enchanting. After retirement Dorothy used her creative skills to make items for her children and for St. Mary's Hospital gift shop.

Dotto loved to dance, and tried to teach her uncoordinated children to waltz, foxtrot and cha-cha-cha. She was a passionate reader of biographies, especially of the presidents' wives. Long before it was fashionable, she was an advocate of healthful foods and exercise. Her children vividly recall exercising with her, eating non-white bread and taking folk remedies.

Dotto loved meeting people and experiencing new places and cultures — something she instilled in all her children. After she and her husband Jack retired, they traveled widely through all 50 U.S. states and Canada, and throughout Europe, Asia, Australia and New Zealand. She earned the nickname Disco Dot when she, Jack and Tess accompanied a busload of college students throughout Europe; everyone enjoyed her youthful spirit and fondness for dancing.

Dorothy treasured the fact that her close-knit family gathered annually from Alaska, California, New York, Connecticut, Massachusetts and Florida, for laughter, stories and good times. She loved to see and hear about her kids, grandkids and great-grandkids. Dotto will live on in the loving, caring and enthusiastic spirit of her family.

A graveside service will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 18 at St. Vincent de Paul Cemetery. The Rev. Sandi Wanasek will officiate.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Circle of Life Hospice, 901 Jones Raod, Springdale, 72762.

Cremation arrangements are by Callison-Lough Funeral Home in downtown Rogers.
