Girl, 7, dies after dragging by mule

A 7-year-old Benton County girl died Wednesday after being dragged behind a mule she was attempting to ride, according to a news release from the sheriffs office.

Investigators found family members trying to revive the girl, Shianne Lane, after a passerby reported the dragging about 9:30 a.m.

The incident occurred in the 12000 block of Ervin McGarrah Road, east of Lowell in rural southeast Benton County.

The girl was being watched by her grandfather while her father slept, according to the news release. Family members had ridden the mule many times in the past, it said.

The girl had the lead rope to the mule tied around her waist when something spooked the mule and it ran. The mule dragged the girl around a 3.5-acre area before becoming entangled and stopping, the release said.

The girl was taken by Springdale Fire Department ambulance to Northwest Medical Center-Springdale where she was pronounced dead, said Roger Morris, Washington County coroner.
