Youth Drowns when Canoe Overturns

Stephen Loyd Crawley, a 16-year-old sophomore at Prairie Grove High School, drowned Friday afternoon when the canoe in which he was riding overturned in deep water near the dam at Lake Wedington.

A Washington County sheriff's office spokesman said another boy who had been riding in the canoe, Jeff Cook, also of Prairie Grove, was pulled to safety by a boy who observed the accident. That boy, listed as Larry Sniffling, had been a passenger in another canoe traveling the dam area.

Sniffling dived from his canoe and grabbed the two boys but apparently lost his grip on Crawley in an effort to swim to the surface of the water. After rescuing Cook, Sniffling again dived under the water for Crawley but could not locate him, the spokesman said.

Rescue teams from the Washington County sheriff's office, and the Fayetteville and Siloam Springs fire departments searched the area from shortly after 2 p.m. when the accident occurred until about 7 p.m. Crawley's body was then found near the spot where he had drowned.

Born Dec. 10, 1960, at Prairie Grove, he was the son of James W. and Betty Jean Erickson Crawley and a member of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church.

In addition to his mother and father, he is survived by two brothers, Larry and James, one sister, Bonita; all of the home; his paternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Loyd Crawley of Prairie Grove; and his maternal grandmother, Mrs. Louise Erickson of Springfield, Ore.

Funeral services will he held at 2 p.m. Monday at the Luginbuel Funeral Chapel at Prairie Grove. Burial will be in the Bugscuffle Cemetery.
