John H Beard, 64 passed away Sunday. He was a retired employee of Continental Emsco, a member of Park Place Methodist Church. He was a native of Stuttgart, Arkansas.
Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Velma Beard of Houston, his sons, John Beard of Austin, Robert Beard of Alvin, Thomas Beard of Houston, his daughter, Mrs. Sue Kemp of Austin, his sister, Mrs. Virginia Murrell of Houston, and three grandchildren.
Services were held at 10 a.m. at Niday Chapel with the Rev. Jim Hawk Officiating. Remains were sent to Stuttgart, Arkansas for burial.

Velma Harris Beard of Houston, Texas, formerly of Stuttgart, will celebrate her 100th birthday on Aug. 29. Velma was raised on the family farm nine miles north of Stuttgart, now farmed by great-nephews Richard and Heath Harris. She graduated from Stuttgart High School in 1932 where she was a member of Delta Beta Sigma. A founding member of The Amici Club, she is a member of the Arkansas Post Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution.
She was raised in the Grand Avenue Methodist Church; she moved to First Methodist after marrying John Beard. Stuttgart nieces and nephews include Frances Kirchoff Blohm, Doug Blohm and Carol Blohm Lyons, Carolyn Kirchoff Mulloy, Terri Mulloy Nolan, Brian Mulloy and Greg Mulloy, Karen Gray Wilson, Ann Gray Pond and Iva Kirchoff, widow of Merlyn Kichoff.
Velma’s sons John, Robert and Tom live in the Houston area while her daughter Sue Beard Kemp lives in Austin. Velma has four grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
For those who wish to send Velma a greeting, she has requested that in lieu of greeting cards, a small donation be sent to The Sack Lunch Program, Servants of Christ UMC, 3827 Broadway, Houston, TX 77017. A reception will be held in the church parlor from 2 to 4 p.m. on Aug. 30.
