Alfred W. “Al” Hill, 82, of Amarillo died Friday, April 27, 2012.
Memorial services will be at 10 a.m. Monday in Cox Funeral Home Benton Chapel with Charlie Cox officiating. Arrangements are by Cox Funeral Home, 4180 Canyon Drive.
Al was born Aug. 2, 1929, in Tonkawa, Okla., to Charles and Minnie Hill. He was raised in Tonkawa and was a graduate of Tonkawa High School.
He was a graduate of Oklahoma Northern Junior College and received a master’s degree from Oklahoma A&M University, now Oklahoma State University. He proudly served with the Oklahoma National Guard during the Korean War. He married Janell Walker on Dec. 24, 1950, in Middleton, Okla.
Al worked for the New Mexico Game and Fish Department then moved to the Department of Interior River Basin Studies at Vicksburg, Miss., Fort Worth, Tulsa, Okla., and Washington, D.C. He moved to Amarillo in 1971 as an environmental specialist with the Bureau of Reclamation. He retired in 1988 after 38 years with the government.
Al was an avid outdoorsman. He loved to fish, hunt and camp. Al could build or repair anything — toys, guns, buildings or furniture. He was the type of man who was always there to help a friend. He was past president of National Muzzle Loading Rifle Association, he served on the board of directors for the National Rifle Association for 25 years, and he was instrumental in establishing the Whittington Center at Raton, N.M. He was a mason and a member of Masonic Lodge No. 1239. He was a member of Khiva Shrine Temple and Khiva Oriental Band. He and his wife, Janell, traveled with the band all over the United States.
Al will be dearly missed by his family and many friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Raymond; a sister, Charlotte; and a granddaughter, Hailey.
Survivors include his wife, Janell Hill of Amarillo; two daughters, Cheryl Culwell and husband Ed of Grand Prairie and Sheila Keefer and husband Bert of Littlefield; two sons, John Hill of Butler, Md., and Carl Hill and wife Paula of Mountain Home, Ark.; five grandchildren, Amber, Emily, Travis, Sara and Grace; and four great-grandchildren, Sam, Hayden, Brooklyn and Katharina
