John McComb was born in 1817 in Christian County, Kentucky. He was the son of Matthew and Elizabeth Gross McComb. John moved to Arkansas with his parents as an infant. They settled in Hempstead County in Arkansas Territory near Brownstown. Matthew died in 1835 and John took over running his father's farm with his mother. John married Sarah Jane Hunter in 1842. He was a successful farmer and lived his entire life working the family farm near Brownstown.
