Son of Michel and Sarah Crouther Alewine
James Hyley Alewine was the son of Michel Alewine and Sarah Crowther, of Abbeville, South Carolina. At the onset of the Civil War, James enlisted in 1961 mustering in at Abbeville County. He served the Confederacy in the 7th Regiment of the South Carolina Infantry, in Company D and G. His rank was Private. By occupation, he was a farmer.
History of Pope County, Arkansas Volume I: bio written by Beatrice Alewine: On January 1, 1871, James Hyley Alewine, born 1839, his wife, Martha Emily Hill, their two children, John Thomas and Janette, arrived in Atkins (AR). They had left Abbeville, South Carolina, November 20, 1870. They traveled by covered wagon (tobacco wagon) with two teams of horses and all their possessions. ----James Hyley known as Uncle Jimmy and his wife had three children after moving to Arkansas. Two died in infancy and only Michael, born 1874, survived. Martha Emily died 1882. Aunt Hannah Crowther came from South Carolina to help Jimmy take care of the children. A year and half later he married Mary B. Burnett Gamble, who had four children. Jimmy and Mary had one child, a daughter Bertha Ella born in 1885.
