Hugh Robert Ross was born in Bossier Parish, Louisiana. He was the son of Johnson A. Ross and Mary Ann Allen. He moved with his parents to Galena, Polk County (now Howard),Arkansas in the mid 1860s and that is where he married Asentha P. Pearson who was living with her uncle, Llewellyn Moore Lewis Childs. Asentha died young at age 39 in 1900. Hugh remarried in 1905 to Lou Anna Barrett.
