David Owen Hays, 101, of Atkins died Sunday, June 17, 2001, at his home. He was born April 18, 1900, in South New Hope, a community south of Russellville. He and his family moved to Atkins on January 17, 1914. He was a retired electrician and sign painter. He was a member of the United Methodist church in Atkins. He was a graduate of Tyler Texas Commercial College and an employee of the Civil Aeronautics Administration during World War II. He was preceded in death by his parents, Meek and Ida Austin Hays; three brothers, Roy, Earl and Austin Hays; and two sisters, Flossie, who died as an infant, and Lois Stewart. Survivors include his wife, Irene Aldridge Hays of Atkins; a son and daughter-in-law, James D. and Mir Hays of Chicago, Illinois; two daughters and sons-in-law, Carol and Richard Ridling and Gaynell and David Staggs of Atkins; seven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. Funeral services were Wednesday, June 20 at 10:30 a.m. at the United Methodist church in Atkins with the Rev. Robert Woody officiating. Burial was in the Atkins City Cemetery by Lemley Funeral Service. Active pallbearers will be Lavon Stanley, Jesse Aldridge, Jr., Jim Stanley, J. L. Austin, Larry Carter, and Floyd Fryer. Honorary pallbearers were the grandsons and great-grandsons. Memorials may be made to the Atkins United Methodist church.
