PRAIRIE GROVE — Barry Houston Parks, 84, of Prairie Grove died Sept. 6, 2004, at the Fayetteville City Hospital. He was born Oct. 26, 1919, in Prairie Grove to James Clay and Myrtle McCormick Parks.
He was a World War II veteran and had a years experience in air combat as a B-17 waist gunner. He was a co-manager of the Beverly Theater in Prairie Grove and worked at the family business, Prairie Grove Telephone Co., where he became president in 1958.
He was a member or leader in local, county and state organizations, including the Arkansas Telephone Association, Farmers and Merchants Bank in Prairie Grove, Prairie Grove First Presbyterian Church, Foundation Mental Health, Governor's Council for School Health Services, Highway 71 Parkway Commission. Ozark Guidance Board of Directors, Ozark Guidance Center, Pit Stop School in Fayetteville, Prairie Grove Lions Club, Prairie Grove Planning Commission, United Community Services, Washington County Democratic Central Committee, Washington County Juvenile Court and Youth Bridge Inc.
He was preceded in death by one son, Craig Parks.
Survivors include his wife, Betty McCoy Parks of the home; two daughters, Susan Parks Spencer and husband James of Prairie Grove; Karen Parks-Gerwig and husband Mike of Prairie Grove; one brother, Donald Parks of Prairie Grove; four grandchildren, Drew and Will Spencer, and Megan and Riley Gerwig, all of Prairie Grove.
Funeral services are scheduled at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the First United Methodist Church in Prairie Grove with John King officiating. Burial will be in the Prairie Grove Cemetery.
Pallbearers include past and present Prairie Grove Telephone Co. employees. Honorary pallbearers are Paul Jones, Bud Helm, Jack Harlan, Frank O'Donnel, Calvin Bain and Richard Nolan.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the charity of one's choice.
Arrangements are by Luginbuel Funeral Home of Prairie Grove.
