High Speed Crash Kills Area Youth

Dennis Lee Slacks, 17, of Route 5 was killed about 2 a.m. Sunday in a one-car accident on Hwy. 45 about seven miles east of Fayetteville when his car went out of control and struck a utility pole.

Trooper Charles Miller said that Stacks was killed when his eastbound car, traveling at a high rate of speed, crossed the center line, left the highway and shuck the utility pole, shearing it off at ground level. Stacks was alone in the car.

Miller said Stacks' body was pinned in the wreckage and that the Fayetteville Department rescue unit was summoned to free it. Firemen said it took about 45 minutes to free Stacks from the smashed car.

Stacks' death brings to 15 the number of persons killed in traffic accidents in Washington County this year. By the same time last year, 26 had died on the county's highways.

Stacks was born Jan. 9, 1957, at Springdale, the son of Charles and Louise Mullins Stacks.

Survivors include his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Stacks of the home; a brother, Harold of Fayetteville; his paternal grandmother, Mrs. Lottie Stacks of Fayetteville; and his maternal grandmother, Mrs. Bill Mullins of Fayetteville.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Goshen Methodist Church. Burial will he in White Oak Cemetery under direction of Nelson's Funeral Home.
