A Funeral Service for Edward D. Michalek of Mountain Home, Arkansas, will be 11:00 am, Thursday, February 19, 2015, at Kirby & Family Funeral Home Chapel, with Pastor Bill Hughes officiating. Visitation will be Thursday, February 19, 2015, from 10:00 am until 11:00 am, at Kirby & Family Funeral Home Chapel.
Edward passed away February 15, 2015, in Mountain Home, Arkansas at the age of 97. He was born December 12, 1917, in Chicago, Illinois, the son of John and Ann Sovis Michalek. He married Sarah Banks on March 7, 1953, at Elgin, Illinois and was a carpenter and inspector. Edward enlisted in the United States Army Air Force, Pacific Theater, in WWII 7th Bomber Group. He flew a B-24 Bomber as a 1st Lieutenant in Japan, India, and the Pacific from 1941 - 1945. He was in the Korean War for 2 years with the 437th Troop Carrier Wing as a 1st Lieutenant on a C-46 Sea Transport plane from 1950 - 1952. The planes he flew in his service career were the B-24 Bomber, C-46 Transport, PT-22, BT-13, and AT-6. He also served as a flight instructor to the Chinese. Edward flew over 150 combat missions. He earned two bronze stars - one for the Central Pacific Campaign in 1945 and one for the Central Burma Campaign in 1945. Edward lived in Mountain Home since moving from Hubertus, Wisconsin, in 1985. He was a member of the Mountain Home Baptist Church. He enjoyed spending time with his family, fishing, and camping.
Edward is survived by his two sons, Wayne L. Michalek of Long Beach, CA, Rick E. Michalek of Gold Canyon, AZ, daughter, Deborah L. Miller of Paddock Lake, WI, twelve grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, three daughters, Patricia A. Cervantes, Sandra L. Rantanen, and Susan E. Michalek, and brother, John Michalek.
Burial will be in the Kirby's Tucker Memorial Cemetery, Mountain Home, Arkansas. Military Honors will be provided by the Ozark V.F.W. Post #3246 Honor Guard.
Memorials may be made to a veteran's organization of choice.
