SPRINGDALE — Lawrence Lee Whitfield, 83, of Springdale died Sept. 11, 2008, at Circle of Life Hospice in Springdale He was born Feb. 16, 1925, in Tioga, Texas, to L. M. and Beulah Gentry Whitfield.

He worked as manager of a feed mill and also in housekeeping at Washington Regional Medical Center. He attended First Church of the Nazarene in Bethel Heights and was a Sunday school teacher for more than 50 years. He enjoyed reading and music. He was the recipient of several distinguished SVC awards from his church and the Purple Heart while serving with the Marine Corps during World War II.

He was preceded in death by his infant daughters, Terry, Theresa and Kathy.

Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Jackie Self Whitfield of the home; his son, Skeet Whitfield of Laurel, Md.; two daughters, Cynthia Davis of Santa Maria, Calif., and Robin Whitfield of Springdale; two brothers, Robert Whitfield of Poplar Bluff, Mo., and Carter Whitfield of Inola, Okla.; two sisters, Norma Jean Crawford of Springdale and Virginia Sparkman of Siloam Springs; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Memorial Funeral Chapel in Springdale, online at www.memfuneral.com. The Rev. Dale Coble will officiate.

Burial will follow in White Oak Cemetery.

Military honors will be conducted by Rogers Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3031 Honor Team.

Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Pallbearers will be Allen Scarbrough, Irving Scarbrough, Brandon Scarbrough, Robert Whitfield, Mike Ferguson and Howard Ferguson.

Honorary pallbearers will be Bob Self, Tony Esposito, Bill Findley, Robert Hatcher, Frank Hicks and Truman Russell.
